back to Fire Department

Fire Chief - The Fire Chief oversees all department operations and budgeting.  He reports to the City  Manager.

Battalion Chiefs - The Battalion Chiefs are assigned to different shifts and work the same "2 days on, 4 days off" pattern as their shift.  In addition  to their emergency response activities, they have the following responsibilities:

One BC is assigned to "operations" and oversees the emergency response, equipment and facilities maintenance.

One BC is assigned as Fire Marshal and is responsible for Fire Prevention Programs including plan checks, field inspections, fire safety presentations, public relations, fire investigation and code enforcement. (We are responsible for determining the cause and origin of  fires in La Verne and the police are responsible for further criminal investigation.)

One BC is responsible for all aspects of training and our Apprentice Program.

Fire Safety Specialist - The Fire Safety Specialist works with the Fire Marshal on all Fire Prevention programs.  The position is non-safety and part-time at this time.

Secretary - The secretary works Monday thru Thursday 8-4, part time.

Captains, Engineers, Firefighter/Paramedics - All shift personnel are assigned to one of three shifts, A, B or C and work a 2-day on and 4-day off pattern.  The engine company at Station 1 includes a captain, engineer, firefighter-paramedic, an apprentice (on Engine 61 or Truck 61) and two firefighter-paramedics (on Medic 61). The engine company at Station 2 includes the same compliment, a captain, engineer, a firefighter-paramedic, an apprentice (on Engine 62) and two firefighter/paramedics (on Medic 62).

Apprentices - Each day we have one apprentice at Station One, as the fourth firefighter on the engine and one apprentices at Station Two as the fourth firefighter on the engine.  We have a pool of approximately 20 apprentices who each have a day in the week to work at the Fire Department.  Usually the apprentices have already been through a fire academy and will soon get their paramedic training.  They are given a small stipend, but they enjoy the experience and we appreciate their help.

Emergency Response - We normally dispatch the on-duty BC, Engine 61 or Truck 61, Medic 61, Engine62 and Medic 62 to all fires or other significant calls.  We take the truck in place of Engine 61 on "structure calls" (note below) and traffic or airplane accidents.  We dispatch a single engine (or truck) and closest medic unit to most traffic accidents or medical calls.  We send an engine company with the paramedic unit to medical calls because the two paramedics on the medic unit will often need help lifting a victim, collecting related information at the scene or performing "CPR".

La Verne City has mutual aid agreements with Los Angeles Fire Department and the United State Forest Service so that additional resources are requested as needed.   On calls to freeway accidents we send the medics from one station and the engine from the other station to cover east-bound through La Verne and into part of Pomona.  Los Angeles County FD covers the same length of freeway, west-bound.

"Structure calls" refer to fires inside of buildings as compared to brush fires or medical calls.
